Mixed review for Graco thermometer,
Overall, I am happy with this thermometer. But it has its drawbacks.
PROS:
- very quick 5-second readout (important when you have a squirming infant and are taking a rectal temp)
- lighted display– easy to read
- keeps memory of last temp readout
- flexible tip and insertion line, so you know how far to insert it rectally
- good battery life
CONS:
- sometimes gives inconsistent or inaccurate readings. I took it with me to the pediatrician to compare it to theirs, and it was only .2 off, so that is accurate enough, but there have been times that I take her temp, it is high, so we go to the doc, and they say she doesn’t have a fever. Maybe it really is just baby’s changing body temp, but it has made me question the thermometer sometimes. Also, there have been times that I take her temp three times in a row and get three different readings (102.6 on first read, 101.1 on the second read, 30 seconds after.) I have found this is true with just about every thermometer, even ones at the doctor’s office. I wonder if maybe taking quick successive readings isn’t right– that you need to wait for the thermometer to rest a few minutes to get another reading, and that maybe the first reading is the closest. Sometimes the successive readings ARE still really consistent to the first, so I don’t know. Over all, I trust the results fairly accurately enough to know if it’s a high enough fever to warrant a trip to the doctor.
